Episode 2: A Celebration of Love in the Little Things
Updated: May 26

This Mother’s Day weekend, my heart turns to the countless ways love quietly flows between mothers and children - not just in grand gestures, but in those small, everyday moments that fill our lives with meaning.
From a Mother’s Perspective
As mothers, we often wonder if the little things we do really matter. We pack lunches, offer pep talks, pray over our children, and comfort them when the world feels overwhelming. Sometimes these acts pass by unnoticed, but every so often, there’s a look, a hug, or a whispered “thank you, Mom,” and we realize those little drops of love have taken root.
I remember a story I discovered while researching Not At Their Funeral: a daughter, years after her mother’s passing, cherished the memory of her mom braiding her hair each morning before school. Such a simple gesture, yet in adulthood, that memory became a thread of comfort, a quiet reminder that she was deeply loved, even when words failed.
From a Child’s Perspective
As children, it’s easy to take for granted the steady presence of our mothers. We assume there will always be another chance to say “I love you,” to call, to visit, or to ask for advice. But as Not At Their Funeral gently reminds us, life can change in an instant, and words left unspoken can become our greatest regrets.
Since writing the book, many people have shared their stories with me. One son told me how, after losing his mother, he still instinctively reaches for his phone to share good news, only to remember she’s no longer there to answer. It’s in those quiet moments that we realize just how much love was shared—and how deeply we miss it.
A Personal Note: The Little Things With My Son
This Mother’s Day, I am especially thankful for the small rituals that highlight my bond with my son. Every morning, all year round, he asks me how my night was, knowing I often work late and worries about my sleep. I cherish how he never forgets to take out the trash each week; he’s my trash hero! Regardless of where he’s headed, he always remembers to text me upon arrival. And without exception, he ends every call with “I love you.” These habits might seem ordinary, but to me, they are daily reminders of his care and thoughtfulness. Each little gesture is a drop of love, reassuring me that our connection remains strong, even as he becomes more independent.
A Spiritual Connection With My Daughter
With my daughter, our love is rooted in something uniquely spiritual. We see God’s hand at work in our daily lives—whether sharing a prayer, reflecting on scripture, or simply noticing the beauty in a sunrise. Our conversations overflow with gratitude, wonder, and faith. In her, I see a reflection of my own journey, and I’m grateful for the way our spirits connect and grow together.
This Mother’s Day, whether you’re a mom or a child, I encourage you to notice and cherish the little drops of love in your life. Express your gratitude. Reach out and say what’s in your heart. Don’t wait for tomorrow to let your loved ones know how much they mean to you.
Not At Their Funeral is a gentle reminder to celebrate these everyday moments now, to give our flowers in the present, not just in memory. May we never underestimate the power of a simple act, a word of thanks, or a loving gesture.
To all the mothers and children, to every family made stronger by little drops of love—Happy Mother’s Day. May your hearts be full, and your words be spoken while there’s still time.

Evelyn’s book is more than just a good read. It is gentle but powerful reminder that so many of us need. As parents , we often pour so much into our own children that we forget we are still someone’s daughter or son too. This book brought me back to that truth.
It reminded me to keep my parents close to my heart, not just in words but in action while they’re still here. Because the regrets and guilt that come after loss are heavy, and Evelyn shows us that so much of that pain can be avoided by simply choosing connection now.
What struck me most is her point that loving our parents well should be a…
It’s how a simple statement like”I love you mum” says a whole lot more. You hear the appreciation, you hear the silent ‘what would I do without you,. I count my blessings everyday and it always includes the gift of my mother and the gift of making me a mother. Happy Mothers Day.
